I took the kids on a frivolous errand and out to lunch as Will-O was in Chicago for the day. (Quite frankly it was too chilly for the park and I knew this contrived errand would kill some time before little guy went down for a nap--is that bad? I was way too tired to try arts and crafts today...)
The kids were VERY well-behaved. Liam waves and says hiiiii to everyone he sees when in public--I forgot about this stage and how legitimately thrilled he becomes when he makes eye contact with another human and then how he really gets jacked when the human knows how to say hi and wave back. Wow.
Scarlet even rode in the cart (pretty much unheard of since she turned 9 months-old). As we traveled down the clothing aisle in the girls' section, all of a sudden Scarlet asked me to stop. She pointed to a a super cute dress that had a tiny matching dress attached to it. She asked what the mini dress was all about and I guessed that it is for the little girl to dress her doll in it so they can be twins. (You know I must quote...) I'm thinking that is kind of a sweet marketing idea for the matchy-matchy preschool crowd. Scarlet replies, "You've got to be kidding me. Is that necessary for life?" Well, no--none of this madness is necessary for life--it's shopping, for heaven's sake.
The outing was a success.
Worst Part of the Day-
Jeez, I can see how teachers get burnt out. I've been doing a 6 week unit on Healthy Eating and Nutrition for my Monday night class. My plan was to start with unhealthy eating/eating disorders and then move to the hows and whys of healthy food choices--seemed reasonable on paper.
I was showing a fantastic documentary called "Thin" done by HBO films that follows 3 women and it is hard core (one of the women even dies after the filming--it is intense and riveting throughout. Tonight we finished the film and we were having talk back about it.
It seemed like half the class just wasn't grasping the basic concept of what healthy vs. unhealthy eating is (ah, duh). The other half of the class now thinks it's cool to have an eating disorder and will definitely be puking up their lunch tomorrow. I don't think this is a highlight of my teaching career.
